Best Calf Exercises11 Picks, Ranked

Your calves are two main muscles on the back of your lower leg. The gastrocnemius is the larger, visible one, and the soleus lies underneath it. Both point your foot and lift your heel, but the gastrocnemius also crosses the knee, so it does the most work when your legs are straight. Bending the knee shifts more of the load to the soleus. That is why a calf plan usually pairs a standing raise with a seated one.

The list

The list mixes machine, barbell, dumbbell and leg press options. Pick one or two from the top as staples, such as Standing Calf Raises and Seated Calf Raise, so both muscles get direct work. Then add a variant for a different setup, like Calf Press On The Leg Press Machine or a single-leg Standing Dumbbell Calf Raise. Use a full range with a short pause in the bottom stretch, and progress over the weeks with more reps or weight.

Covers: Gastrocnemius (medial and lateral heads) and soleus.

  1. Standing Calf Raises

    Machine · Isolation

Targets the gastrocnemius — the big visible calf muscle. Standing position keeps it under stretch. The primary calf exercise.

  2. Seated Calf Raise

    Machine · Isolation

Targets the soleus since the knee is bent. Both standing AND seated are needed for complete calf development.

  3. Smith Machine Calf Raise

    Machine · Isolation

Standing calf raise without a dedicated machine. Bar on shoulders, toes on a block. Available in any gym with a Smith machine.

  4. Calf Press On The Leg Press Machine

    Machine · Isolation

Allows heavy loading in a safe position. Many people prefer this to standing raises.

  5. Standing Dumbbell Calf Raise

    Dumbbell · Isolation

Dumbbell version for home gyms or when machines are busy. Single-leg version is great for addressing imbalances.

  6. Barbell Seated Calf Raise

    Barbell · Isolation

Barbell seated calf raise targets the soleus without a dedicated machine. Pad the bar for comfort.

  7. Standing Barbell Calf Raise

    Barbell · Isolation

Free weight standing calf raise for gyms without a calf raise machine. Barbell on back, toes on a platform.

  8. Calf Press

    Machine · Isolation

Machine calf press provides controlled, heavy loading for the gastrocnemius. Smooth and joint-friendly.

  9. Rocking Standing Calf Raise

    Barbell · Isolation

Continuous rocking motion for calf endurance. Barbell version adds progressive loading to the movement.

  10. Donkey Calf Raises

    Other · Isolation

Classic bodybuilding calf exercise. Stretched position provides great gastrocnemius activation.

  11. Calf Raise On A Dumbbell

    Dumbbell · Isolation

Single dumbbell calf raise for unilateral work. Addresses calf imbalances one leg at a time.
